Turks

The territory of Central Asia has been raided at various times by the Ottoman Empire, the Mongol Empire and the Russian Empire. Some Central Asian peoples consider themselves descendants of the Turks, others do not. Therefore, the Turks play an important role in the history of the entire region.

Most Turks in Central Asia live in large cities, capitals and economic centres. Due to their history, Turks have a high status. Central Asian Turks tend to be well-educated and well-off. Many of them are successful businessmen.

Beliefs:

Turks are Sunni Muslims who believe in one God (Allah) and an eternal heaven and hell. The word "Sunni" comes from the Islamic term "Sunnah", which means "the beaten path". Sunnis believe that the right path is the path of the majority. Thus the Sunni tradition is one of political conformism, although the Turks have been more flexible than many of their Muslim neighbours. Other Turks hold more secular beliefs, although they attend mosque on special occasions. Some also hold pre-Islamic beliefs. For example, some believe that people have the ability to curse others by "jinxing" them.

Although Turks have access to Christian resources in their own language (Bible, Jesus film) and missionary organisations are working among them, they remain staunch Muslims. Only prayer can break through the strongholds of Islam. We need intercessors who will stand daily in the breach and pray for the salvation of these precious people.

Prayer:

  • Pray for zealous believers to reach out to Muslim Turks with faith and love
  • Pray for a spiritual hunger among the Turks that will be quenched by none other than the only Saviour, Jesus Christ
  • Pray for the Gospel message to spread far and wide among the Turks
